An attack on two white men out outside a Salt Lake City hotel Sunday night by a group of six black men is being investigated as a possible hate crime.
Cell phone video captured the incident, which happened after Kelly Leeper and his friend noticed from his hotel room window the group near one of their trucks, which had a small Confederate Flag magnet displayed.
Leeper told local Fox 13 News that the truck also had $50,000 worth of welding equipment in the back.
Leeper and his friend, who were in town from Wyoming for a Garth Brooks concert, went down to the hotel parking lot to confront the group. A verbal argument broke out with the black men telling the two to move the truck. One of the white men responded saying telling the black group to move instead. The scene quickly turned violent when a black man threw a punch knocking out Leeper’s friend.
The black men then ganged up on Leeper, who came to his friend’s defense, punching him and dragging him to the ground. He and his friend were treated for minor injuries afterwards.
Warning video contains strong language and violence.
The group left the scene in a silver-colored car. “Somebody thought to get a plate number as well and that’s really going to help in this case. I think we’ll probably be able to track down that vehicle,” said Sgt. Robin Heiden, spokeswoman for Salt Lake City Police Department. The partial license number is from the temporary Utah tag: 9-7-S-20.
Leeper told Fox 13 that the fight turned racial, with both sides hurling racial slurs.
“It could potentially be a hate crime. We’ll then present all that to the district attorney who will make that final determination,” Heiden said. To be charged with a hate crime, prosecutors would have to determine that the black men attacked the white men because of their race.
“I’ll be damned if I ever come to Salt Lake again without bringing my gun,” Leeper said. “If I want to fly the Confederate Flag, it’s my right,” he added.
