When thieves break in and steal, they’re hoping to score some jewels, not lose the ones they have. But that’s exactly what happened to 37-year-old suspect Philip Owens of Lake Dunlap, Texas. Owens allegedly broke into a Lake Dunlap home on Monday in the early morning hours via a locked sliding glass door, using a crow bar to gain entry. Owens was wearing a head lamp to provide the light needed to commit his crime.
Upon entry to the home, Owens was confronted by the homeowner who then shot Owens in the groin. Police investigators said Owens’ injuries are serious but not life threatening. The homeowner is credited with stopping the home invasion and possibly helping to solve other break in crimes in the area.
Police investigators said there have been a string of crimes involving theft of property in and around the Lake Dunlap area over the last few weeks and months. During their investigation it was found that Owens had recently pawned a lot of merchandise supposedly stolen from other homes in the area.
Investigators are trying to pick up the pieces of Owen’s trail and link the crimes back to Owen, if indeed he is responsible for committing other crimes in the area.
Investigators reported that equipment used to break into homes was found on the scene near Owen’s person. That equipment reportedly does not belong to the homeowner. The crimes that occurred in the area all happened with the same modus operandi. Entry was gained into the homes by a crow bar like the one found in Owen’s possession and some of the homes were entered via the sliding glass doors.
Owens and what is left of his jewels were taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center for treatment. The homeowner reported that he had no choice but to confront Owens for fear of his and his family’s lives.
