(Before It's News)

Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s defense of bank bailouts during Tuesday’s GOP debate earned him the infamous distinction of scoring the “least favorable reaction” ever from a Frank Luntz focus group.

“A month ago we showed you the highest debate moment that we have ever tested since 1996. Well, tonight, I have to show you the lowest moment,” he said. “The moment our New Hampshire voters said, they’ve heard enough.”

As reported by Western Journalism, Sen. Ted Cruz last month scored a 98 on a scale of 100 with a Luntz focus group during his takedown of the CNBC moderators. Kasich’s back and forth with Cruz last night earned him an 8.

Kasich just scored the lowest ever in my focus group. His support of bailouts “for people who can afford it” scored an 8. #GOPDebate

After Cruz indicated he opposed the “too big to fail” policy regarding banks and hypothetically would allow even Bank of America to go under, Kasich interjected, saying that is the difference between someone guided by political philosophy and a chief executive dealing with practical reality.

“When a bank is ready to go under and depositors are getting ready to lose their life savings, you just don’t say we believe in philosophical concerns,” the Ohio governor said. “Philosophy doesn’t work when you run something….We need an executive who’s been tried, has been tested.”

“Why would you then bail out rich Wall Street banks and not Mom and Pop?” Cruz replied. The senator stated that there is a role to play for the Federal Reserve, as a central bank, to insure people’s deposits, but stood by the idea that a wholesale government bailout of the banks by the taxpayers was wrong.

The line that garnered the greatest audience disapproval is when Kasich stated that he would prioritize those who received funds from the government by need. “I would figure out how to separate those people who can afford it versus those people who are the hard-working folks who put their money in those institutions,” he said, drawing boos from the Milwaukee crowd.

The Luntz focus group agreed. When he asked his New Hampshire focus group, by show of hands, who had a negative reaction to Kasich’s remarks, all raised their hands. Regarding his overall performance, the pollster went down the line asking for one-word reactions. Responses included: “irritating,” “boring,” and “finished.”
