Every year, a battered world needs a little Christmas. And every year, an anonymous wealthy man known only as “Secret Santa” shares the Christmas spirit by giving away $100,000 in $100 bills to random members of whatever community he wishes to visit.
Last year, he worked through the police in the Kansas City area. This year, he went in person to a Pittsburgh retail store to spread his gifts in person.
“This year, the timing is perfect for everybody to come together — one random act of kindness at a time,” he told CBS News as he stunned shoppers with cash.
For Mildred Morris, the timing could not have been better. She is suffering from stage 4 breast cancer, something “Secret Santa” could never have known.
“Now this is for you. It’s a hundred dollars from Secret Santa,” “Secret Santa” told Morris.
“I just came from chemo,” she said, breaking down in tears. “And I work every day, sir.”
Morris said that before the encounter, she would have said that a million dollars could not have turned her day around. But the gift from “Secret Santa” overwhelmed her with happiness.
“It’s just amazing that there’s so much compassion out here with all this other ugly stuff that’s going on,” she said.
Some recipients vowed that the “Secret Santa” the gifts would be passed along to others.
“I promise, as soon as I get out of here I’m going to call my job,” said Temika Green, a local YMCA coordinator who said she’d use the money to help children in her after-school program.
“Well, put another couple hundred in there,” “Secret Santa” said. “And I’ve got to quit talking to you, I’m running out of money. We love you. You’re doing great. Don’t stop.”.
“Secret Santa” explained that he performs his annual giving to promote kindness among all people.
“Kindness is the bridge between all people. Kindness is the one thing that cuts through everything regardless of your station in life,” he said.
