More details are emerging of an unruly passenger who was hog-tied and removed from her United Airlines flight on Thursday. The flight was scheduled from New York to Chicago but the pilot had to divert the flight to Detroit to have the passenger removed.
In what could be considered an act of flight rage, the woman reportedly snapped when the flight attendant accidentally spilled a drink on or near the passenger, who attacked the stewardess in rage.
According to fellow passenger Matthew Goldgraben, the woman approached him before the incident and asked if she could share a row with Goldgraben, who obliged. But when the drink was spilled, the woman went out of control, screaming and attacking the stewardess, ripping off her necklace and scratching her face.
Passengers promptly took the woman down to the floor and held her there until police boarded the plane in Detroit and removed her in shackles.
It’s unclear if the woman was suffering from mental illness but the passengers injured in the attack are pressing charges.
The diversion kept the plane on the ground in Detroit for over an hour before it was allowed to resume course. According to USA Today, the cost of flight delays and diversions resulting from unruly passengers can range from $10,000 to $200,000 dollars. Fines of up to $25,000 have also been authorized by Congress, but the Federal Avaiation Administration rarely imposes them.
