We hear it nearly every day — our universities need to be a “safe space” for students.
But it appears one university didn’t worry too much if a young woman who supports Trump was free from harassment by a Black Lives Matter supporter. What the BLM activist did to the woman when he saw she supported Trump is an outrage.
Clifford Durand, a Black Lives Matter supporter attending St John’s University in New York City, was unhappy when 20-year-old Brianna Algazali walked into class with a Donald Trump sticker on her laptop computer. So he began tweeting that he was going to attack the girl and threatened to smash her computer.
At one point Durand tweeted out, “7000 retweets and I’ll smash this b***h’s computer.”
Four hours later the tweet had been re-tweeted over 16,000 times and someone finally told Algazali her picture and a threat against her safety was all over the school.
Algazali immediately went to the school administration to complain that she was being threatened. That wasn’t all she did, though. Eventually she tracked down Durand and they began to argue. The young woman demanded that Durand delete his tweet to which witnesses say he replied, “make me.”
At one point Algazali was so upset she threw her drink at him.
Durand then punched Algazali in the neck or chest, an action Durand admitted to on Twitter.
“SHE THREW HER STARBUCKS AT ME AFTER CUSSING ME OUT AND SHE GOT SHOVED IN THE NECK,” Durand tweeted after Algazali confronted him about his earlier threatening tweet.
Durand later deleted the admission.
School administrators are saying they are investigating the incident, but Durand has not been suspended so far. In fact, no serious action has been taken at all thus far.
The school also released a statement saying, “Thank you to everyone who reported the incident to us. This type of behavior will not be tolerated. Public Safety is handing the situation. Safety is our top priority. Any student in violation of our Code of Conduct is subject to our conduct process.”
As to Algazali, the New York Daily News reports she said she didn’t want to talk about the situation during the school’s investigation.
“St. John is handling it right now I don’t want to say anything,” Algazali said. “They’re handling it the best they can, but I fear for my safety”
