November11, 2012 volcano activity

Some Alaskan volcanic activity to start off with this day.  AVO reports a small ash eruption from Cleveland volcano overnight.  The brief explosion appears to be similar to the one pictured here from June of this year.
Small earthquakes have generally been on the decline around Long Valley Caldera over the weekend, but a M2.3 event struck beneath the southeastern base of Mammoth Mountain overnight.  (station MRD)
The frequency of gas and ash exhalations have increased dramatically during the past 24 hours at Popocatepetl volcano (Mexico).  The events, similar to that which occurred overnight at Cleveland volcano, occurred an average of five times per hour. Seismicity is relatively low at Popo.

Still no seismic available data from the Guatemalan volcano, but camera photos from this morning show a tranquil Fuego volcano, while the Santiaguito dome complex (Santa Maria volcano) chugs with small gas and ash emissions.

Seismicity at Nevado Del Ruiz volcano (Colombia) has decreased markedly over the weekend.  Apparently the volcano refused to co-operate with an eruption drill conducted by INGEOMINAS and governmental authorities on Friday and Saturday. (station OLLZ)  What appear to be small low-frequency events appeared for a short time overnight on seismograms at Machin volcano, also in Colombia.  (station CIMA)
Small earthquakes are less numerous on Tongariro (New Zealand) seismograms today, but remain relatively frequent on records from nearby Ruapehu volcano.  Offshore to the north, White Island volcano hums with continuous volcanic tremor.
Recent satellite images show SO2 plumes issuing from Nyiragongo volcano (DRC), and Nevado Del Ruiz.  I wonder if the appearance of a plume at Ruiz, after many days with no apparent plume has anything to do with the sudden drop-off in earthquakes at the volcano(?).  Just wondering out loud.
