I’ve spent a good deal of my life fluctuating from skinny to fat, and have devoted a good deal of time and money on workouts, diets, equipment and have even signed up to some of the popular weight loss programs. Through the years I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t work for me personally, and have had a chance to see what worked for others as well, so I have a pretty good idea about what an effective and healthy weight loss program should look like. The major problem I had with most diets, even the meal replacement programs, where they cook the food for you and do all the calculations, was that the food is pretty boring, bland, not very tasty and often lacking in nutrients.

This is why I got a little excited when I first heard about Bistro MD. The idea behind it was that you shouldn’t just cut down on calories, but that you should still get all the nutrients the body needs and have those same old, boring healthy ingredients prepared and seasoned so that the food tastes good. I’ve always enjoyed visiting my grandmother who worked miracles in the kitchen with vegetables, lean meat and some spices, so I knew that healthy food could be made tasty, but could a pre-packaged meal taste as good? And even if it was tasty, would it really work?

The media buzz that got me thinking

Several publications have written about it – CBS Moneywatch.com called it a reasonably priced effective weight loss program, and Health magazine had said some nice things about it as well – it was also featured on TV shows (Doctor’s Wake-Up Call with Gillian Michaels of Biggest Loser fame). Every once in a while I see similar products, programs, diets and exercise machines hit the market. At first there is a big craze for the “shiny new thing” and then it dies down and we get some serious data, which is usually not that impressive. With Bistro MD it was a little different – people didn’t go totally crazy about it and ascribe magical properties to it, and from what I had heard about it, the program seemed very straightforward and logical. I decided to check it out and see if it was any good.

Customer service

The first thing I noticed was a very well designed, informative and user friendly website. Browsing through it was a breeze and I got all the information I needed – what the program was about, examples of meals, men’s and women’s programs and the support from the qualified staff. I had spent a good hour clicking around and reading the content, and it only cemented my resolve. A team of certified dieticians, MDs, chefs and an athletic trainer with the title Doctor of Physical Therapy under his belt smiled at me from their team page offering information on all of them so I could verify their credentials with a bit of Google searching if I felt the need. No funny business here, just some cold hard facts – I liked that. Once you’ve signed up for the program you could get additional advice on dieting and exercising via email, phone or Skype (my preferred method) and they also had a newsletter where you could get some additional info. Ordering was simply a matter of choosing the program I wanted and clicking on the “order now” button.

The nutrition factor

Doctor Caroline J. Cederquist seems to really know her stuff. What you get form the meals depends on the program, so you will be eating between 1.100 and 1.400 calories every day. The meals are designed to incorporate a good amount of lean protein, complex carbohydrates, fiber and good fats. It will have you losing about 2-3 pounds a week. The thing I liked the most is that the people at Bistro MD understood that a fundamental aspect of good nutrition and consistent, sustainable dieting is giving people some diversity in their food choices and making tasty meals that looked pretty nice as well. The biggest problem I always had with diets, and most people are just like me on this one, was the fact that I got bored of eating and seeing the same dishes on my plate day after day, and the meals Bistro MD offered had the variety necessary to keep people on the program in the long run.

The Food Choices

Their website stated they used “ingredients from responsible sources”, and although you can’t really verify these things (I’m not the FDA after all) it’s still nice to know that they thought investing in healthy ingredients was important enough to include on their website. The ingredients include:

  • Beef
  • Chicken
  • Turkey
  • Fish
  • Eggs
  • Cheese
  • Fruit
  • Vegetables
  • Snacks

The meals are truly delicious and you will find things like cinnamon roasted apples, berries, low-fat cream cheese, Canadian bacon and cheddar cheese, all in regulated portions. This makes it much easier to stick with the program and avoid relapsing and hitting the doughnut shop on the weekend. I always felt that boring old diets took too much away from people – all the flavor and sweetness disappeared from my food every time I tried to prepare a healthy meal. “It would take one hell of a cook to make these ingredients work” I always thought, and the boys and gals at Bistro MD must have had the same idea when they decided to hire a bunch of trained chefs to make their meals. And boy am I glad they did. My favorite meal so far was the berry crepe and some turkey on the side, a small meal to be fair (I’d usually stuff my face with a dozen crepes in one sitting on my cheat days) but it really helps take away the edge when you feel the need to eat something sweet.

How the program works

It’s simple enough, a pretty straightforward affair of choosing what you want, ordering and having it sent to your address. You have a choice between men and women’s programs, between the 5 and 7 day program and you can have the optional snacks (believe me, you want the snacks). Men have three snacks per day and women have two. The total cost of the 7 day program with 3 snacks a day (the most expensive option) will be $190, or $27 a day. You can spend 27 bucks in one sitting at a decent restaurant, and a several years back my junk food bill for a day would normally be in the $30-$40 range, so it didn’t really affect me financially. You also get full support from their staff and you can call, Skype or email to get advice. The meals will be different from week to week, and it will be several weeks before the menu starts repeating, so you won’t get bored with the food. The food is cooked from fresh ingredients and the frozen and packaged. You keep your “stash” in the freezer and simply microwave it when it’s time to eat. When you feel you’ve had enough of the program you can cancel and that’s that. It’s easy and delicious, you just need to get used to the smaller portions.

Conclusion

All in all I’ve had a pleasant experience in just over 2 months I’ve been eating the Bistro MD meals, and although I’ve cheated a few times (once on a friend’s birthday where I had cake and some soda and about 4 times on my own when I just couldn’t resist some French fries or a couple of slices of pizza) I’ve had some very good results and would recommend it to everyone. I incorporated a workout regime (strength training for an hour 4 times a week, and medium intensity cardio for 15-20 minutes 3 times a week) in my overall weight loss program so I ended up losing about 15 pounds in these 68 days. The program is great and will keep you losing weight, while giving you enough tasty food to help reduce your desire to gorge on sweet and fatty foods. The most important thing is to stay motivated so as a parting gift I’d like to share with you some motivational posters that will help you stay focused on your goals and dig deep to find the strength to keep going.
