During the recent months, the expansion in construction site injuries has prompted construction site security checks all over the country. This expansion has been mostly noticed in the reports coming from contractors who work on building, repairing and restoring private homes. These contracts are usually considered less dangerous that constructing commercial building, since it is usually conducted on lesser heights and the demands are not as strict.

This expansion of injuries means that more and more people are demanding workplace injury compensations and large amounts of money are being spent now on compensating workers and their families. The injuries listed in the reports range from minor slips and trips (which demand that the worker takes a leave of absence for a few days) to serious fractures and fatal injuries.

It is obvious that these injuries have to be dealt with, and it is always better to be safe than sorry. Since the safety of the workers is the obligation of the employer, it is important that they follow certain tips that will keep the workers safe.

Manual handling

This is a thing that should be avoided whenever possible. One of the major causes of injuries is exactly manual handling and lifting of heavy things. This can cause many injuries ranging from strains and fractures to more serious things like head trauma or a fatal injury. Lifting (especially if done improperly) can even lead to many chronic muscle injuries which make the worker unable to work anymore.

The recommended thing here would be to use trolleys, carts, trucks or forklifts to move things whenever possible. Also, make sure to have the materials delivered where they are needed, or as close to that spot as possible, thus making it easier for the workers. However, if manual lifting is unavoidable, make sure that the workers are properly instructed in lifting techniques and that they will conduct the lifting at a height with which they are not uncomfortable.

Working at height

The definite number one cause for injuries, at least according to the reports, is falling from a significant height. These injuries range from gashed limbs to fractures, concussions, comas and even fatal injuries are not uncommon. This is why workers who work at great heights must be the most protected ones, with the accent being on fall protection. Using fall arrest systems is widely recommended, in combination with proper scaffolding and cherry picks.

Also, it is recommended to avoid conducting work at heights completely whenever possible. Instead, it is advised to conduct all work from the ground level, using tools that extend and help reach great heights from the ground.

Scaffolding

Scaffoldings usually fall under the area of fall injuries and fall protection. However, I will devote a paragraph to them, because scaffolding injuries are quite common. Falling from or through improperly set, or malfunctioning scaffold can cause many serious injuries because of the possibility of being hit multiple times all across the body. These accidents are usually fatal, or end with at least multiple fractures and serious head traumas.

In order to prevent such a thing from happening, it is very important to make sure that the scaffolding is properly placed. Don’t give the job of placing and positioning scaffolds just about to anyone. Make sure that the person is qualified for doing anything with scaffolding. A qualified person will know exactly where and how should the scaffolds be places, in order for them to be stable and firm. Also, have that person inspect the scaffolding after every shift, because it is very important to have all the possible wrongs reported and repaired before the new shift arrives. Failure to do so may result in someone dying because of someone else’s mistake.

This advice that is provided here is based on recent research that has been conducted about the construction site safety. In order to stop the effect, which here is the occurrence of many injuries on the construction sites, you have to battle the causes, and prevent accidents from happening. This means that proper protection for the workers has to be in place at all times. They also have to be properly instructed and must absolutely be prepared for any kind of emergency. This will hopefully lead to a decrease in workplace accidents and make the construction sites injury-free.
