Working on a construction site is considered to be one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. Each year, thousands of construction workers die or are fatally injured from the consequences of an injury suffered at their workplace. For this reason, the governments of every country are trying to make new and improved rules that will make sure that injuries on the construction sites are reduced to a minimum. Of course, it is impossible to completely eradicate these mishaps, because a lot of these accidents happen because of construction workers’ disregard for both their own safety and the safety of others involved in the construction process. For this reason, I will here provide you with a few tips for making sure that no accidents happen on the construction site. However, there are many more rules that need to be observed and it is recommended that you consult a construction safety plan for more information.

Construction equipment

First of all, it must be made sure that people who are operating the construction equipment that is being used on the site are people who are trained in using that particular machine. Even more so, they should have passed the training for using that particular model of the machine, because not all models work the same. If untrained people are left to operate the machines, then you risk many things going wrong, and the ending result of most of them will be that someone is injured, possibly severely. So, make sure that all the workers are trained to operate their machines well, that they get on and off these machines in the proper manner, that they operate them reasonably and that they are not trying to cut corners with it just to finish the work faster.

construction site hazards

People making crowds on the construction site

When something is being built, ordinary by-standers love to stand and watch how the construction workers do their job. On site, it may happen that a lot of people have nothing to do at present and they will usually crowd and watch someone operating a machine. This is very wrong. Machine operators (especially backhoe drivers) will tell you that their biggest problem is when the construction site is crowded. This is something that is reasonable. A backhoe is not a small machine. Man, on the other hand, is very small, compared to the machine. When you need to operate such a machine in a crowd, it can get a bit difficult to avoid injuring someone. So, when there is a crowd of people, the operator should make sure that the crowd is cleared before he starts working with the machine. Sounding a horn usually does the trick, but if it does not, then the operator should consider asking the foreman to clear the crowd. Clearing the crowd is not the responsibility of the machine operator and should be done by the foreman.

Signalization

It is very important that the contractor who has hired the workers to construct a building marks all the areas in the construction site properly. Not all areas are safe on the construction site. One place will have some electrical wires sticking out; another will be used to store hazardous materials, while there might be a hole on a completely different place. All these things have to be marked accordingly. If you signalize to your workers that there is danger near, they will have to be extra careful in order to avoid injuries. On the other hand, not having clearly marked areas of the construction site will bring unwanted troubles for your workers, because surprises lurk at every corner on a construction site. Construction worker safety is best ensured with proper signalization combined with proper training.

Conclusion

In the end, it is important to say that these tips are here to give advice to construction workers on how they should behave on the construction site. Also, it might show a contractor what he should do in order to prevent injuries on the construction site. Again, I must stress that injuries on the construction site can never be completely eradicated, but the point is to always keep them at a minimum. Lives of workers are always more important than anything that is being built, because a human life has no price.
