People often tend to be more creative and innovative in order to be recognized and original. When we are talking about architecture there are always new ideas and creative projects. There are many buildings and constructions that are unique and alternative, and here are some of them.
The Sydney Opera House, Sydney, Australia
We can say that The Sydney Opera House has become a trademark of this city. It was built in Sydney Harbor in Australia, on the peninsula. This building was designed by Jorn Utzon, the Danish architect who won the Pritzker Prize Laureate in 2003. In 1957 the construction project of The Sydney Opera House started and it wasn’t finished until 1973. The Sydney Opera House was built in three stages; first stage consisted of constructing and building the upper podium, second stage consisted of building the outer shells and third stage was the interior design and construction. The material used for this construction is diverse, from glass and plastic to the ceramic tiles and the pre-cast concrete. The walls, and also the ceiling, are made out of laminated glass, the roof is made out of ceramic tiles and the ribs of the shells of The Sydney Opera House are made out of pre-cast concrete. The interior of The Sydney Opera House is also magnificent and it consists of grate number of facilities and venues such as Concert Hall (the largest interior venue at Sydney Opera House), Joan Sutherland Theater (very acoustic theatre with the orchestra pit and traditional theatre seating made of white birch timber), Drama Theatre (a medium size theatre with black walls and deep blue carpet), Playhouse (originally designed for chamber music recitals with seating close to the scene), Studio (designed primarily for contemporary music performance), Utzon Room (named after the architect who designed the Sydney Opera House, Utzon Room is a glamorous venue for parties and different performances), Forecourt (the one of the world’s greatest stages with beautiful view on the harbor) and Recording Studio (magnificent filming locations and a world class recording studio) and over a hundred rooms. The Sydney Opera House is the National and World heritage landmark and it is under the UNESCO protection.
Dancing House, Prague, Czech Republic
This unusual construction is a product of cooperation of two architects, Vlado Milunic, the Croatian-Czech architect and the Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry. Dancing House is a home of Nationale-Nederlanden (the insurance company) and it was designed in 1992 and finished in 1996. This building is also known by the name of Fred and Ginger after the famous dancers Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers because the building looks like the pair of dancers. Because of its unusual shape this type of architecture is called deconstructivist, or new baroque. There are 99 concrete panels, each of them being different in shape and dimension supporting this unusual shape of the building. Dancing house, or Fred and Ginger, consists of two bodies. The first one is a tower covered in glass and it is supported by the curved pillars. The second body has moldings and windows that follow a river in a wavy mode.
The Chrysler Building, New York City, New York, USA
The Chrysler Building is the famous skyscraper in New York City and it was the home of Chrysler Corporation from 1930s until the 1950s. Today this magnificent building is a home of various companies and firms. It was designed by architect William Van Allen for a project of Walter P. Chrysler. This building is the highest brick-made building in the world with 77 floors, and it is the classic representative of Art Deco architecture. On the 31st floor there are the replicas of 1929 Chrysler radiator caps used as corner ornamentation, while on 61st floor the corners are graced with eagles. The Chrysler Building is also famous for its terraced crown made out of austenitic stainless steel and silvery metal. This construction is considered by a great number of contemporary architects to be one of the finest buildings in the New York City.
When being authentic is not enough…
All these constructions are somehow unique and authentic, and they certainly left the mark, not only in contemporary architecture, but architecture in general. These buildings are the result of the creativity and new ideas of their architects and it may be said that they are years ahead of their time. Nowadays, many architects need good marketing aside from creative projects in order for their ideas to be successfully realized. There are many companies that deal with this kind of work, widely known as architectural marketing. They provide meetings with people and interested parties in order to find the best possible solution so that the architects’ ideas can be realized.
