National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn made the following statement this evening regarding the Missouri Senate race and the nomination of Todd Akin as our Republican candidate:
“I want to congratulate Todd Akin on his victory in the Missouri GOP Senate Primary. This was a hard fought contest but now we look forward to helping elect Todd as the next United States Senator from Missouri.
“Todd’s belief that we need to lower taxes, reduce wasteful government spending while repealing and replacing ObamaCare is exactly in line with the hardworking men and women of Missouri and I look forward to working alongside him in the Senate to do just that.”
style="text-decoration: underline;">BACKGROUND….
After tonight’s GOP Primary, the story in Missouri will be one of a longtime, liberal politician who made a vast amount of promises to Show Me Staters and failed to live up to nearly every single one of those promises…an individual who chose to abandon her constituents for a newfound friend – Barack Obama.
Claire McCaskill arrived at the U.S. Senate in 2007 promising to be an independent voice for the people of Missouri. Unfortunately, she has been anything but independent, choosing instead to side with Barack Obama on nearly every piece of his far-left agenda including ObamaCare, the stimulus, higher taxes, and cap-and-trade. All the while facing multiple questions surrounding her ethics, including failing to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars on her private jet, improperly billing taxpayers for political trips and missing tax payments on her Washington D.C. condominium.
Despite her promises to be in the mold of Harry Truman and be an independent operator,Claire McCaskill voted with Barack Obama 98% of the time in 2010 and 92% of the time in 2011.
Claire McCaskill provided the key 60th vote to pass President Obama’s government takeover of health care, promising it would lower costs, and instead Missourians are paying more than ever for health care and seniors are facing a $500 billion cut to Medicare. When presented with the opportunity to repeal ObamaCare, McCaskill has steadfastly stood by President Obama. And when more than 70% of Missouri voters rejected ObamaCare, McCaskill insulted them by saying they simply weren’t fully aware of all the bill’s positive aspects.
When Missourians entrusted her with being a good steward of the economy, unemployment stood at 4.6%, but because of the policies she and Barack Obama hoisted on the American people – unemployment is now a stifling 8.3%. Despite promising to support a pay-as-you-go system, McCaskill voted for the stimulus claiming it was a means of injecting money into the economy and putting people back to work, yet Missouri’s unemployment rate is still at a very high rate of 7.1% and our federal debt has ballooned to $15.9 trillion.
And instead of protecting Missouri’s energy producers from oppressive federal regulations, she abandoned them by first stating she opposed cap-and-trade but then ultimately sticking by President Obama and supporting its passage.
The icing on the cake with voters could very well be the fact that while McCaskill has maintained that they should pay higher taxes, she has a pattern of not paying her own. After an investigation, Politico discovered that McCaskill had flown 89 flights on her private jet – with her senate office funds paying for those flights. It was then discovered that at least one flight paid for by taxpayers was used for political purposes. It was then later discovered that McCaskill failed to pay nearly $300,000 in property taxes on the plane.
The fact is Missourians rightfully feel betrayed by Claire McCaskill. Her 2006 rhetoric convinced them that she would be a fighter for Missouri, instead she went to Washington and found a new friend in President Obama and embarked on a path to pass a radical, far-left agenda that is causing unemployment to remain above 8%, causing health care costs to skyrocket and putting our country on the brink of financial ruin.
The pollster for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch target="_blank" href="/r2/?url=http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/mccaskill-trails-all-three-gop-candidates-in-senate-race/article_7dc3f2e4-d84e-11e1-a6e2-001a4bcf6878.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">summed it up quite nicely last week after noting that McCaskill already trails Akin in their most recent poll, “A lot of people are going to hold her accountable for her close ties to the president.”
On the issues:
align="center"> style="text-decoration: underline;">TaxesWhile Todd Akin has spent his life defending our country and working to create jobs, Claire McCaskill has spent her time as a career politician supporting her best friend Barack Obama and her decision to side with the President and his liberal policies is exactly why Missourians will retire her this November.
