(Before It's News)

Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) is looking to create a premium version of its Tweetdeck platform in a move that could see the social media giant start charging its users subscription fees.

The company has more than 300 million users across the globe but is yet to turn a profit since it was founded 11 years ago as it has failed to attract enough advertising revenue.

Subscription fees could be a possible way of bolstering revenues through a new version of Tweetdeck, a platform that helps users navigate Twitter.

Twitter spokeswoman Brielle Villablanca said the group is conducting a survey to assess the interest in a “new, more, enhanced version of Tweetdeck”.

“We regularly conduct user research to gather feedback about people’s Twitter experience and to better inform our product investment decisions, and we’re exploring several ways to make Tweetdeck even more valuable for professionals,” she said.

However, there was no indication that Twitter would begin charging fees from its users.

The news first surfaced on Twitter where screenshots of what the premium version of Tweetdeck would look like were posted by a journalist affiliated with the New York Times.

The version could be free of advertising and include “more powerful tools to help marketers, journalists, professionals, and others in our community find out what is happening in the world quicker,” according to one of the screenshots posted on the account @andrewtavani.

Twitter’s shares have plunged to US$14.93 since it started its first day of trading in 2013 at US$44.94. The initial public offering was priced at US$26.

The company in the fourth quarter reported its slowest revenue growth since its IPO as advertising revenue fell.

In contrast, its bigger rival Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) has seen its share surge to US$139.53 since its 2012 IPO, which was priced at US$38. Facebook posted a 51% increase in fourth quarter revenue as it continued to attract users.
