Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. a South Korean multinational electronics company headquartered in Suwon, launched its much awaited flagship device Galaxy S4 at the Samsung Unpacked 2013 in Manhattan on Thursday evening.Samsung-logo

There were some notable hardware improvements in the device and some new additions in software features. These features will definitely make Galaxy S4, one of the most advanced and feature rich smart phone.

Hardware Features

  • 5 inch full HD Super AMOLED screen. Resolution of 1920×1080. PPI ~441 is much more than iPhone5, which has a PPI of ~326 and Galaxy S3 which has a PPI of ~306, but it is little less than that of HTC One’s PPI of ~469.
  • 1.9 GHz Quad-core Snapdragon processor/1.6 GHz Octa-core Exynos 5410 processor depending on the region. The interesting part is that the phones with the Octa-core processor will not use all the 8 cores simultaneously at any point of time. It will only use one of the 4-cores at a time. Those two cores are A7 and A15. For routine works like making a call, browsing the phone book, typing a message that does not require much processing power, GS4 will make use of the A7 cores. When the usage switches to a processor intensive application like 3D gaming, the power is then given by A15 cores. Exynos 5410 also has a graphics chip inside it which will make this phone the fastest smartphone even in terms of graphics performance.
  • 2 GB of RAM, and 16/32/64 GB internal storage options (expandable upto 64 GB via a MicroSD card)
  • 13 MP rear camera and 2 MP front camera.
  • WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
  • GPS/GLONASS
  • NFC
  • Bluetooth 4.0 (Low Energy)
  • IR LED
  • MHL 2.0 – Mobile High-Definition Link allows to connect mobile phones, tablets and other portable electronic devices to high-definition television and audio-receivers. It supports up to 1080p HD video and 7.1 surround sound audio while simultaneously charging the connected device.
  • 2600 mAh battery
  • 130 grams weight and 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm dimensions.

Software Features

  • Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
  • Tracks your eyes – well partially-  Galaxy S4 tracks reader’s eyes partially. While watching a video if the use sees somewhere else, the video will pause, it will resume once the user looks at the screen again. If the user is looking at the screen while then he can scroll the screen by slightly tilting the phone.
  • Air Gestures – Galaxy S4 uses a sensor that lets you move your hands left or right without actually touching the screen to switch between multiple websites, photos and songs. You don’t have to touch your phone if your hands are not clean.
  • Multi-lingual voice recognition – The S-translator application can be used to translate from one language to another. It supports languages like Chinese, French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. It also has a better voice-recognition application than Siri.
  • Photographer can be in photos too – This is something really cool. S4’s camera allows the photographer to be in the photos that he clicks. The only drawback of having a good camera was that you were missed from most of the photos, not any more. S4 can use both the front and rear camera at the same time to do this trick.

The price of the phone is not yet announced.  Samsung may price the phone somewhere near HTC One.
