Sometimes it is the simple things in life that can make a profound effect on your health and longevity. Those following the Mediterranean Diet have long been associated with being some of the longest living people on this planet. Now Science is starting to reveal why.
Fresh fruits and vegetables play a key role in the Mediterranean Diet for Longevity for a number or reasons. Most notably is because of the rich source of fiber, vitamins, minerals and wide variety of polyphenols as varying as the spectrum of colors they come in.
An exciting new study published in the Journal of Nutrition associated high polyphenol intake with a 30% reduction in mortality in older adults by measuring nutritional biomarkers.
The research concluded that overall mortality was reduced by 30% in participants who had rich-polyphenol diets (>650 mg/day) in comparison with the participants who had low-polyphenol intakes (<500 mg/day).

It is “vegetables,” for pete’s sake!!!
Hi Arcturus. Yes you are correct vegetables do play a key role as a polyphenol source. But there are specific polyphenols from certain foods in the Mediterranean Diet which studies are showing to help with longevity. For example even whole grains are a good source of certain polyphenols …and of course olives and olive oil, to just mention a few.
Healthy and great tasting diet! I love eating these healthy foods, and they give me lots of energy!
