Members of all political parties in the Rajya Sabha, including the BJP and Congress on Monday condemned the move in a Russian court to ban the Bhagavad Gita as an extremist religious text, and the government assured that it was taking up the issue with Russia and appropriate action would be taken soon.
The issue was raised during Zero Hour by BJP member Tarun Vijay, who told the place of Bhagavad Gita, was like that of the Sun and Himalayas. He asked, “Can you ban Sun and Himalayas?”
Vijay told the issue has brought together all the political parties and wanted the government to talk to the Russian Government. He also said eminent men like Vinoba Bhave, Albert Einstein and Mahatma Gandhi had drawn inspiration from the Gita.
Foreign Minister S M Krishna has described as ‘absurd’ a complaint of Russia that the Bhagavad Gita is an extremist text. BJP demands this controversy should be taken seriously and the government to declare the Bhagavad Gita as a national book.
On Monday, Hindus in Russia made a ditch effort to save the Hindu holy book Gita from a ban in Tomsk city in Siberia. The hearing in the Siberian court is virtually over and verdict is scheduled on December 28.
