The plans to launch couple of Prithvi-II missiles that are capable of carrying nuclear weapons in a salvo mode within few minutes of each other were terminated at the last minute on Wednesday after a technical bug developed in one among them.
A top official of the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) told that, Both the missiles that were planned to be launched by the SFC (Strategic Force Command) of the Armed Forces from Balasore at the Integrated Test Range were held back, after the glitch was identified during the countdown.
The problem was being looked into and it wasn’t yet identified when the rescheduled test-firing would take place. The Prithvi-II has a range of 350-km, it is a single stage liquid propelled strategic missile and it is also capable of carrying both the nuclear and conventional warheads. The missile is equipped with an advanced inertial navigation system and it’s payload ranges from 5 Tons to 10 Tons to a maximum distance of 350 km. This missile has already been included into our armed forces and was tested many times as a part of regular user trials.
