After the debacle in the court over age row of Army Chief General V K Singh, the Union Defence Ministry has denied the permission to travel to Israel. Reason behind the denial was referred as ‘Critical situation prevailing in the Middle-East’.
The three-day visit to Israel of Mr. Singh was scheduled to start from March 16 to 18. He has now been advised to travel to Israel in the next half of the year. According to the report, the situation in the Middle-East is not favorable with war clouds gathering over Iran. An official visit to Israel could send a wrong signal to Iran.
V K Singh was scheduled to visit Tel Aviv to discuss the current and future military programmes between the two countries.
Mr. Singh is slated to step down on May 31, 2012. If his contention was upheld, he could claim to be in service until March 31, 2013. He claimed that his birth year is 1951 and not 1950 as recorded by Defence Ministry. The error generated by a clerk who had listed his age as 16 instead of 15 in the UPSC (Union Public Services) examination form for National Defence Academy.
The Supreme Court disposed the petition of Mr. Singh and directed him to accept May 10, 1950 as his date of birth.
