The Pentagon has ordered the US military's Cyber Command unit to open a new front against Islamic State and attack the terrorist organization's computers, e-mail systems and IP-based networks. It reflects President Barack Obama's initiative to use all of the cyber weapons currently being used against Iran, North Korea and China in the war against ISIS. The experience and knowledge acquired by the NSA and other US intelligence bodies to protect American infrastructure from cyberattacks will now be used against ISIS tools for recruiting fighters, sending orders to different fronts, and spreading propaganda and hate. Earlier, Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work said “We are dropping cyber bombs. We have never done that before.”
Defense sources said the US has implanted malware into ISIS networks to carry out Advanced Persistent Threat attacks and help intelligence services locate the terrorist organization's military infrastructure and economic resources.
Our unique angle on these subjects – and strong intelligence dimension – has earned DEBKAfile a global reputation and a steady readership – which skyrockets in times of crisis.
