China Bus Crash Explosion Leaves 36 Dead

A passenger bus collided with a methanol tanker in northwest China early on Sunday and burst into flames, killing 36 people. Three of the 39 bus passengers traveling at around 2 am local time on a highway near Yan'an, Shaanxi Province, survived the crash and were being treated at the hospital, according to a report on the state-run channel CCTV. Two of the three survivors were taken to hospital in Yan'an where they were receiving treatment, and were still in critical conditions, CCTV reported. One survivor, Zhang Shixiong, received burns on more than 50 percent of his body. [Zhang Shixiong, Crash Survivor]: “I was sleeping when it happened. And I heard a 'bang' sound. I got up immediately, and as I did I grabbed a person next to me and said 'quick, run,' it's on fire, and I turned my head and just ran out.” Another survivor, 27-year old Wei Xuemei, incurred burns to 35 percent of her body. [Wei Xuemei, Crash Survivor]: “The fire came towards me, and I knew that we were on fire, and I ran for my life and tried to break the window but I couldn't, and just escaped from under the frame.” The cause of the accident is still under investigation. Traffic accidents are among the leading causes of death in China. Chinese official reports, based on police statistics, say about 100000 people have been killed in traffic accidents annually over the past decade.
