Oscar-winning director James Cameron is looking to change how we watch movies—and he's beginning in China. In an interview, Cameron said today that he's opening a joint venture in China to provide 3-D filming technology to his Chinese partners and Chinese state television. [James Cameron, Director]: “The best way to put it is, if it's happening in 3-D in China, we want to be right at the nexus of that. But this is not about hanging out a shingle as a production company, make no mistake about that. We may take an equity position in a specific production if that makes sense at the time, again, some reduced margin in terms of the services and technology that we provide, that's a possibility. But that's not our primary goal. We're not really here to be content producers. We're here to be enablers.” His company, Cameron Pace Group's new China division won't be making films right away, but just providing the technology for 3-D production to begin. Hollywood has long been interested in gaining a foothold in China's booming movie industry. Cameron said the deal was big, but wouldn't give details. Cameron has long been fascinated by China. In his 2009 blockbuster “Avatar,” a lot of the scenery was inspired by actual places in China. The famed floating peaks in the movie was actually inspired by the Southern Air Column at Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. The mountain has since been renamed to Avatar Hallelujah Mountain.
