Insects, armyworms, have been destroying agricultural crops on a large scale in northeast China. Ms Shen is a farmer in Changchun City of Nongan district. Armyworms have attacked Shen's corn field, destroying almost the entire crop. [Ms Shen, Local Farmer]: “The insects here are incredible, they are so thick. They ate all the corn leaves. If they keep eating, there will be no more. In the fields, there are insects everywhere.” Farmers say armyworms reproduce very quickly, and if they go one day without spraying pesticide, half the crop could potentially be destroyed. Farmers use old tools to spray pesticide, as they cannot afford the expensive pesticide machine. This old way of spraying pesticide is harmful to farmers and can cause poisoning. [Ms Shen, Local Farmer]: “There are some who got poisoned, even in the hospital. There are those who need a blood transfusion since the poison entered their blood. They keep shivering, their entire bodies are weak, some are in a coma, some even spit out blood.” Nearly one thousand farmers have been poisoned and some have died as a result of the pesticides. NTD reporters contacted Liaoning's local provincial government and employees say they are not aware of the situation. Zhongshan University Pharmacy Professor Li Xingshu says the government should take responsibility.
