Tennis champion Andy Roddick speaks of his retirement at a press conference during the 2012 US Open Tennis Championships. Full Story: Tennis champion Andy Roddick, the last American man to win a grand slam tournament, will retire after this year's US Open. The former world number one made the announcement at a press conference on Thursday. [Andy Roddick, American Tennis Player]: “I just feel like it's time. I don't know that I'm healthy enough or committed enough to go another year. I've always wanted to, in a perfect world, finish at this event. I have a lot of family and friends here.” Roddick says he has plenty of other projects to excite him now that his days on the tour are nearly over: [Andy Roddick, American Tennis Player]: “We announced yesterday or the day before we're building with my foundation, a youth tennis and learning center in Austin, I'd like to be hands on with that and not see it periodically, I'd like to be kind of on-site every day.” Andy won the US Open in 2003. He also reached the final of Wimbledon 3 times, in 2004, 2005 and 2009. However, on each occasion he was defeated by the great champion Roger Federer, who is the present world number one, and the winner of an amazing 17 grand slam titles. Roddick is currently ranked 22 in the world, with career earnings totaling over $20 million.
