Vigil in Dharamsala Commemorates Tibetan Self-Immolators

This Tuesday a group of exiled Tibetans in India's northwest province held a candle vigil. The vigil was to commemorate and express their solidarity with two Tibetans who self-immolated this past week. One was 26 year-old Dolkar Kyi, a mother of two, who came from a small farming village. She immolated herself in Gansu province near Tso Monastery. According to International Campaign for Tibet, “she called out for the return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet, and shouted that there was no freedom in Tibet”. She died Tuesday, shortly after she lit herself on fire. The other Tibetan was a 21 year-old monk by the name of Lobsang Tsultrim. He was a monk of the Kirti Monastery, where seven monks have already immolated themselves. He was alive when Chinese police took him away but his current whereabouts and condition are unknown. [Neema, Member of Tibetan Women's Association]: “So, this is the 46th case of self-immolation that has happened inside Tibet since 2009. And the Tibetans and supporters of Tibet and their cause inside Dharamsala have gathered for this candlelight vigil in solidarity with our martyrs, who have sacrificed their life for the cause of Tibet.” According to Free Tibet the immolations stem from the Chinese invasion of Tibet. They say that since the occupation, “lives have been lost and Tibetans in Tibet do not enjoy basic human rights.
