As Hurricane Sandy battled the eastern China's state run media CCTV had cameras glued on Hurricane Sandy when it crossed through the US But no reporters covered this storm inside China itself. It was a people storm, if you will. Thousands of Ningbo residents — shouting, holding signs and saying, “No to the production of paraxylene.” This chemical, in short PX, can damage the central nervous system, liver and kidneys if inhaled in large amounts. Chronic exposure may even result in death. And until Monday this oil refinery was going to produce it. Chinese netizens were outraged at the media blackout. Right now they're circulating two images on the internet. This one is of a CCTV reporter covering Sandy in the US And this one is of a foreign reporter in Ningbo. The contrast earned angry and cynical comments from the online Chinese community. Here's what one writer from Guangdong wrote: [Poster "Tian You," Guandong]: “CCTV reporters fly to the US and stand without fear in the hurricane, just trying to prove how Americans are in a life and death situation. But I want to ask, 'Where were you when Ningbo held protests?'” Currently Ningbo government declared it will halt the 8.8 billion dollar project. After violent clashes with police over the weekend, the protests died down on Monday.
