Commuters cross Brooklyn Bridge on foot as New York City begins recovery from devastating storm Sandy. Full Story: People were back on New York's famous Brooklyn Bridge on Wednesday, after Hurricane Sandy's trail of devastation. The storm left New York without its subway, rail and bus system, forcing many people to either walk, bike or drive into the city. Limited commuter rail service came back on line late Wednesday, and some New York subway service is due to return on Thursday. The New York area's John F. Kennedy and Newark airports reopened with limited service, following thousands of cancelled flights that left travelers stuck for days. LaGuardia Airport, a third major airport serving the nation's busiest airspace, was flooded and remained closed. It will take days or weeks to recover from the huge power and mass transit outages. More than six million customers are without electricity in the region. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the storm may be the most expensive in US history.
