Pope Benedict held evening vespers in the Sistine Chapel to mark the 500th anniversary of the room's famed frescoes. On Wednesday (October 31) Pope Benedict the 16th led evening prayers at the Sistine Chapel in celebration of the Vatican chapel's famed frescoes. Five-hundred years ago, on October 31, 1512, Pope Julius II held an evening service to inaugurate the room where Michelangelo created the famous works of art. The frescoes immediately became the talk of the town and have since become one of the most famous works of art around the world. [Pope Benedict XVI, Head of Catholic Church]: “It is, as if, during liturgical action all this symphony of figures comes alive, certainly in a spiritual sense but also inseparably in an aesthetic sense because the perception of art is a typically human act and as such, involves the sense and the spirit. In a nutshell, the Sistine Chapel, observed during prayer is even more beautiful, more authentic and reveals itself in all its richness. Here everything lives, everything resonates when in contact with the word of God.” The Vatican has given warning that it may eventually limit visitors in an effort to protect the famed frescoes. The Sistine Chapel is arguably the most visited room in the world. With tourism growing every year, some five million people, as many as 20 thousand a day in summer, walk through the famous room.
