Syrian opposition groups meet in Doha to thrash out a consensus that will provide a more respected platform on the international stage. Full Story: Talks in Doha continued well into Friday morning as Syria's various opposition groups attempt to thrash out some kind of consensus. The meeting, held in Qatar and supported by the United States and other Western nations, is seen as essential in preventing the divisions, which have so far prevented the ousting of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. It is hoped that a new inclusive Syrian National Initiative, will play the same role as the Transitional National Council, that eventually overthrow Muammar Gaddafi in Libya last year. [Burhan Ghalyoun, Former Head of Syrian National Council]: “Unifying the (Syrian) opposition is not a concession being presented for certain countries or for the friends of Syria; unifying the opposition is the duty of all opposition factions and we are heading towards unifying the opposition regardless of the reaction or demands by some countries.” If the talks conclude successfully, the Syrian National Initiative can position itself as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people, seek international recognition, and expect greater military support. The location of the meeting underlines Qatar's central role in the effort to end Assad's rule. The Gulf state also played a significant role in funding the Libyan revolt to overthrow Gaddafi.
