Red Bull’s Lincoln Tunnel Blast [video]

A few weeks ago the boys from /DRIVE got to ride with Sebastian Vettel as he did donuts in an Infiniti, and slid around the streets of New Jersey. This was done to promote the totallyforsureinnowaynothappening New York F1 race. In that video David Coulthard did a burnout in a Red Bull F1 car, before screaming into the Lincoln Tunnel. In weirdly sexual automotive terms, for that tunnel it was an evening with the Hussein Bolt of cars. (The tunnel was later seen smoking a cigarette and staring off in the distance, smiling.)

The video of that tunnel run has now been released. Philharmonics, music students and opera singers, sit down. Observe. Learn. This is how to make our ears stand up in applause. Decades ago men implanted sticks of dynamite, blowing out rocks and then finishing the job with pick-axes. More recently they use giant excavators the look part space rocket/part circular drill bit. Scientists and urban planners tell us that tunnels were designed to convey people from one side of a natural obstacle (mountain, water) to the other. But we all know they are for resonating the sound of your exhaust back into your face, and alerting other motorists of your mood, horsepower, and sexual prowess. Tunnel blasting are one of my favorite things in the world. The world needs more of them.

So I thank Red Bull for sending an F1 car through this tunnel. There’s something extra cool about an F1 car being driven on a public road, flying at 190MPH down the right lane shooting sparks, and shaking bricks loose as it passes under the Hudson River. And the donut turnaround is icing on the cake. Jump to watch this beautiful, raucous, spectacle.
