Johnny Depp Wants To Buy Wounded Knee And Return It To Indians

Such is Depp’s commitment to the Native American cause, he is planning to spend millions of his own money to return land, Wounded Knee, in South Dakota, to their ownership. The site, the scene of an 1890 massacre, is up for sale for $3.9 million.
Depp said, “It’s very sacred ground and many atrocities were committed against the Sioux there. And in the 1970s there was a stand-off between the Feds (Federal government) and the people who should own that land. This historical land is so important to the Sioux culture and all I want to do is buy it and give it back. Why doesn’t the government do that?” ”I am doing my best to make that happen. It’s land they were pushed on to and then they were massacred there. It really saddens me.”
I hope he is able to do it andIhope the native american media stop ridiculinghim for portraying a native american on film as racist. The guy has proven time and again that his role as tanto had deeply affected him, he was adopted by the commanche nation as an honorary commanche and made an appearence at the natons largest pow wow. Good for him. But he’s not the only private citizen, part indian who has negated some of the neglect of the USA government in restoring their rights. For which the USA governments shamefully haven’t honored a single agreement they made with them. There was long distance competition rider (sorry forgotten his name) who saved the mustang from being rounded up and destroyed by the government of the day, by winning the most grueling long distance race of all in Arabia. He used the prize money to buy all the mustangs off the USA government, and the first thing he did was let them free. There’s an excellent movie about it called Hidalgo.

Being part Cherokee myself,my great grandmother 100% Cherokee,I’ve always felt horror at the tragedy and plight of Indians who this land belonged to long before it was FOUNDED. Now my hope is that they will get the dignity they deserve,we all deserve,as human beings. Yet the longer we live,the worse our atrocities against HUMANITY become. When Obama signed the UN Declaration for the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in 2010 that gave them the teeth needed to get their “sacred” lands back. So why haven’t they asserted themselves via this international declaration to get their land back if they’re the true indigenous of America? Obviously something is amiss as to the reason they can’t acquire this land on their own.

3.9 MM is chump change to a big star. if he wanted to do it, it would have happened already-quietly and behind the curtail without all this posturing.
Awesome…from what I can tell this an act of goodness…and I am all for that.
Any act of kindness which comes from the heart should be applauded, and this seems to be the real thing. ‘Our’ Queen (and many of us don’t want her) would never make such a gesture. Her forbear Victoria ignored a plea for aid from starving Canadian natives, who wrote to her in desperation. Native tribes sent aid to Ireland during the potato famine, that generosity of spirit is the finest human quality.
A little off topic… if Hollywood is throwing millions in to help the Sioux. Buy the unfinished Dunbar Resort and operate it as a business, to provide funds for all the Sioux Reservations in South Dakota.
Wounded Knee is a painful memory, but it will always be there. The property has little value except to exploit the massacre, which will never be allowed to happen, except on the internet, unless AIM comes back.
Costner is one living person who owes a debt to the Sioux. Some emotional blackmail will cut the asking price, which is too high anyway. Get Depp to finance it.
Tribal government will have property in a financially viable area of the Hills, which makes it easier to expand. And a revenue source, which is better than the BIA.
