The Trayvon Martin decision is front page news and I suspect it will be seen as another opportunity by people like Dennis Banks to don a hoodie and go for a little media time.
The president has said to “honor the acquittal” as rendered by a jury in a court of law-whether people choose to do so is a personal choice.
But another reality exists in the murder of a black man, a civil rights worker at that-Perry Ray Robinson Jr., whose family awaits the opportunity to either rejoice in the pursuit, indictment, and possible convict of his murderers or to “honor”their acquittal.
An effort the black leadership, individuals like Al Sharpton, and entities like the NAACP, the DOJ, and the Congressional Black Caucus have been conspicuously absent from.
Notable strides have been made due to the civil rights movement-that isn’t to say it’s all good though.
What is required now is for the black community to employ the tools set in place to elevate themselves- tools like access to education, voting rights, and the opportunities that previously haven’t been available.
To empower themselves and take control of their communities.
I say this as an indigenous person and say if they fail to do so the onus lays on them just as it will for us as we continue our struggle.
Racism is a fact of life-always has been, always will be- you cannot legislate what is in a persons heart. I refuse to embrace any aspect of racism either as a mindset,a victim,or an excuse to not do everything I can to succeed on a personal level.
To do so creates the slavery of dependency in the individual and on the generational level-every person owes them self more that that-every parent owes their children more than that-every person owes their people the effort to do and be the best they can.
