Ukraine soldier killed by landmine in separatist east

Kiev (AFP) – A Ukrainian soldier was killed, and another injured, after stepping on a land mine in the war-torn separatist east, but a new ceasefire deal remains in place, a military spokesman said Saturday.

“One soldier was killed and another injured” in the Lugansk region, but the new truce, which came into force on September 1, “is being respected,” said Ukrainian spokesman for military issues Andriy Lysenko.

Almost all the Ukrainian soldiers who died this month were killed by mines, according to official figures,

On Friday the military reported two deaths and five injuries in two separate incidents in the restive east of the country where pro-Russian rebels are seeking autonomy from Kiev.

The separatist authorities for their part on Saturday accused the army of having used heavy weapons in the Donetsk region for the first time since the new ceasefire took hold, according to the rebels’ DAN news agency.

The new ceasefire in Ukraine’s war-torn east has stilled much of the fighting that had rumbled on in hotspots despite an earlier truce deal in February.

The move is the latest attempt to stop a conflict that has killed some 8,000 people since April 2014 and left almost 18,000 wounded, according to UN figures.

Russia portrays its western neighbour’s conflict as a “civil war” in which it has played no part.

The fighting was preceded by Russia’s March 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula.

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg will on Monday make his first visit to Ukraine, where he will meet President Petro Poroshenko, the alliance said in a statement on Friday.

Activists and radicals of Ukraine’s Right Sector are putting cement bins on the road connecting Ukraine and Crimea, 112.Ukraine television broadcaster reported on Sunday.

Representatives of the Crimean Tatars and of a Ukrainian extremist organisation – Right Sector – which is banned in Russia, begin an ongoing protest to block food supplies to Crimea.

They plan to prevent trucks carrying food from getting the goods to Crimea and back to Ukraine.

“Right now there are about three hundred people at the road near the Chongar settlement, and more people are getting there by own cars and by busses,” the television channel said. “Not a single truck is nearby now, as at night drivers got recommendations to move further from the border.”

A deputy of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada (parliament), Refat Chubarov, told reporters earlier about a protest due from Sunday, where the participants will block movement of trucks, delivering goods to Crimea, and at the same time protesters will allow cars and pedestrians cross the border.

“Our protest will be long. Our position is the Verkhovna Rada should discuss bills on settlement of relations between mainland Ukraine and occupied Crimea,” he said, adding it is necessary to cancel the law on a free trade zone in Crimea.

Kiev Fears Elections, Republics Can Gain Control Of Whole Donbass !

http://novorossia.today/kiev-fears-elections-republics-can-gain-control-of-whole-donbass/

The Kiev Regime has held consultations with the German side today to determine what measures should be taken to prevent DPR and LPR from holding elections, said Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Kostiantyn Yeliseyev.

“We hope that these messages and signals will finally reach the corresponding capital [Moscow], and these “elections” will be canceled, otherwise they will have unpredictable and negative implications for the entire process,” Yeliseyev said.

Yeliseyev noted that the elections in the regions of Donetsk and Lugansk must be held in accordance with the Kiev Regime legislation and in full compliance with the standards of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights.

At this, he added “we are in an active dialogue with our partners regarding the development of a whole range of actions and measures in case of a negative scenario: the [pseudo-]elections are held [by the Republics DPR and LPR].”

Kiev Regime fears Militants venture to gain control over whole Donbas with local elections – However, Yeliseyev stressed that Ukraine still hopes the elections in Donbas will be canceled.

In July, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko stated that plans of representatives of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics to hold elections on October 18 could have devastating consequences for de-escalation of the situation in Donbass.

The Central Election Commission of Ukraine took a decision that the local elections scheduled for October 25 this year would not be held in the occupied territories of 125 settlements in Donetsk region and 146 settlements in Luhansk region.
