~~So you want to live the “off the grid” lifestyle in the middle of nowhere. Is this something you really thought through? Do you realize what effort it is going to take? Are you aware of the risks? Have you considered the downsides? Are you sufficiently prepared for what may come? And are you far enough away from civilization, roads, rail-road tracks, etc. to keep you from having unwanted visitors (plague of humanity)?
If you want to see how much effort it takes to live the “off the grid” lifestyle then you might want to consider studying the Amish and how they handle day to day living, it is very hard work just to maintain the basic needs of having a family, they are living in the 1800’s for the most part, so they would be a great study case for that lifestyle.
Okay, you are at your “off the grid” location and you start having chest pains (the type that radiate all the way to the tips of your fingers and jaw), you are having a heart attack, how are you going to get the medical attention you need and in time? Or what if you break a leg or an arm? Medical issues are some of risks and downsides of living out far from civilization and if a major event happens then everyone will have those risks because emergency medical care will be difficult to acquire if not impossible to get. Accidents happen and some of the most horrific I’ve seen are from the “farm”, farm equipment amputating limbs, having your guts sliced open, unintentional bullet/knife wounds and the list goes on. Living “off the grid” can be burdensome and some people may not adjust to the lifestyle and may develop mental issues (how do you handle a crazy person that is your loved one or what if they commit suicide?). Think about the risks, think about what can, what may happen when living far away from services, do you or your family members have the skills set to handle the worst? And can they survive without “you”. Can you find alternatives to needed medications (blood thinners, statins, diabetes medications? Etc.)?
What about the 2 legged locusts (people) that will be venturing out for food and supplies after an event has taken place. Now you are your own law-enforcement agency. I know that lots of people are watching zombie shows on TV, now just replace them with “insane from hunger” humans eating tree bark just to have something to eat and they are walking about in-search of “their” next meal (maybe you!). Is your location far enough away from infrastructure (homes, roads, rail-road, navigable waters, other places humans can use for travel)? Think about if you were starving or your kids, how far from home would you be will to risk to find food and other supplies. Finding ways to hide your residence would be a good idea, being so far out where it is almost impossible to get to you-even better!
Look at all the risks associated with living “off the grid” and find ways to mitigate them (lower your risk). You may not be able to lower your risk to “0” (zero) but you may be able to make it livable. And yes there are great rewards for living that lifestyle. Hard work and planning on the front end will make it easier on the back end.
