BATON ROUGE, LA (MMD Newswire) April 14, 2016 — On May 4th, 9am-4pm, National Deaf Rights Rallies are taking place at state capitols across the country simultaneously, with the Louisiana branch of the Deaf Grassroots Movement hosting the rally at the state capitol in Baton Rouge. Guest speakers include Governor John Bel Edwards and its sponsor, Representative Patricia Haynes Smith of District 67.
Deaf Grassroots Movement (DGM) is a national Deaf Rights movement aimed at drawing attention to, identifying and supporting the needs of the DDBHH (Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and Hard-of-Hearing) communities across the country. Here in Louisiana, DGM of Louisiana is working to bring positive changes by overcoming the oppression and the obstacles that we, as a community, face on a daily basis. We are working with a coalition of organizations serving the DDBHH, political leaders, and our community to take a stand against the broken and incorrectly implemented system here in Louisiana and nationally.
Just three weeks ago; for the first time in Louisiana history, a sign language interpreter stood besides the governor at his state of the state address giving us absolute access to his addresses and press conferences. This will be a continued effort by his office. This is a HUGE victory for us in our work towards equal access for all. DGM of Louisiana has been making incredible strides in our coalition effort to empower, educate, and re-inspire as well as advocating for the DDBHH community everywhere here in the state of Louisiana.
