A cruel unforgiving catastrophe is starvation.

Starvation is nothing new for millions around the globe–but going hungry seems to be a rapidly spreading condition which will certainly expand the ranks of the global malnourished in the very near future.

As I write, several nations are in the initial stages of civil unrest and rebellion against their elitist rulers as a direct result of food shortage or high cost of food. Potential starvation may be the definitive trigger for a great social metamorphosis around the globe.

For the situationally aware, staying abreast of the rapidly deteriorating global socioeconomic climate is advised, many unintended consequence can and will manifest from this root cause–hunger– which is responsible for ongoing and increasing human suffering.

Shamefully, the issue is not one of shortage, it is one of profiteering as speculators turn others misery into personal gain. This seems to be the standard way of government supported corporate interest even in the wake of their collaborative (intentional) recent collapse of the world economy, even that demonstration of crass and heinous larceny was not sufficient for their greed.

Shortages speculation is driving world food prices out of sight for many who have meager incomes, nations faced with the specter of massive crop failures either through rapidly growing drought or flood conditions are now turning to hoarding and stockpiling essentials, further exacerbating the food shortage crisis while leveraging inflation in a world where incomes have not grown for many years–as usual the bottom line–is the bottom line.

The touted jobless, homeless “recovery” will now feature food deprivation as well.

Global food scarcity fears heat up – Thursday, February 17, 2011

World Bank President Robert Zoellick said global food prices have reached “dangerous levels,” underlining the anxiety among governments keen to head off a repeat of the 2008 food crisis, which sparked riots in countries from Egypt to Haiti.

The bank said high prices had helped push 44 million more people into extreme poverty since June, warning some nations may make the mistake of imposing curbs on shipments.

“There is stockpiling and hoarding going on from Bangladesh, right through Indonesia and the Philippines, as everyone is scared about food inflation,” said Sajjid Haider Pasha, director of Hong Kong-based grains trading and shipping agency Shunshing Group.

Hunger has been regarded as a “foreign” issue in the past, but is hunger soon to become a domestic reality?

Stay tuned…
