People in China cannot access the BBC’s English-language site due to what appears to be “deliberate censorship,” according to a statement issued by the corporation on Oct. 15.

The restriction happened a day after six police officers were filmed beating up a political activist in Hong Kong, causing shock and outrage at home and abroad.

Their victim was alleged to be social worker Ken Tsang, a Civic Party member, who was among 45 people arrested. Police also used batons, and pepper spray on the protesters.

The BBC site was last disrupted when it covered the news of rights lawyer Chen Guangcheng‘s escape from house arrest in 2012.
