Privacy and Security issues have plagued quite a few Facebook users over the years and the social network has now set up a Security Tips webpage where it offers you tips on the latest types of spam and security threats. After the LinkedIn and eHarmony.com hacking episode last week, this is probably Facebook’s way of making its users feel secure in using the service. The page also gives users a few tips about how to detect suspicious messages and bring them to Facebook’s attention.
Today while logging into Facebook, I saw this message on top of my feed.
Clicking this link landed me on to Facebook’s updated Security page.
The video features Facebook Engineer Pedrom Keyani talking about how users can easily detect spam and suspicious posts.
3 main tips:
1. Spotting scams
Well it is common knowledge that the gullible among us go and click on something that is too good to be true. This inevitably starts the spam overload that we see sometimes . The Facebook Security page lists examples of the type of scams that may originate on Facebook.
2. Choosing a unique password
Well, this should be obvious even without the tips from Facebook. Choose a strong password which is alphanumeric and has some special characters. And yes, do not disclose this to anyone! If you want to change your Facebook password, you can visit this link.
Here is the Ultimate guide to creating super strong passwords. Read it and implement this on all your accounts. (Use different passwords for all your online accounts).
3. Confirm your mobile number
If you ever forget your password, Facebook can text you a new password if you confirm your phone number with the service.
Some more advanced tips are available here. Get to know the latest security updates by clicking on this link.
