AT&T is lowering the price of the HTC One X smartphone, and a T-Mobile version of the device is scheduled to arrive in September, according to various reports published this week.
On Friday, an AT&T spokeswoman told Angela Moscaritolo of PCMag that the cost of the HTC One X would be dropping from $199.99 with a two-year contract to $99.99 starting on Sunday, July 29, as part of a special back-to-school promotion. RadioShack also confirmed to Slashgear‘s Cory Gunther that the price cut would also be available at their stores on that same date.
“Dropping the HTC One X down to $99 makes this phone a steal, as it was already awesome at $199,” Gunther added. “This will also cause some problems for Motorola and their new Atrix HD (see our review) as it offers similar specs and a smaller screen. This could also undercut Galaxy S III sales.”
For those unfamiliar with the device, the HTC One X operates on Android 4.0.3 with Sense 4.0 and features a MSM8960 dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, an Adreno 225 GPU, and a 4.7″ Super IPS LCD2 (720×1280, 312DPI) display, according to Cameron Summerson of Android Police. It also has 16GB internal memory, 1 GB of RAM, and a pair of cameras.
In related news, on Wednesday, David Beren of the T-Mobile blog TmoNews reported that he had confirmed that the HTC Era 42 was, in fact, the HTC One X+ for T-Mobile. Furthermore, he wrote that the “plus” in the title refers to the Nvidia Tegra 3+ processor, which means that the T-Mobile version of the device (which, consequently, is reportedly scheduled for a September release) will have 1.7 GHz worth of processing power.
Those rumors are unconfirmed, but if true, it would mean that T-Mobile would be “the first U.S. carrier to offer its customers a quad-core smartphone,” according to CNET‘s Jessica Dolcourt. She added that the HTC One X+ “would likely carry the One X’s 4.7-inch 1,280×720-pixel HD display, 8-megapixel camera with 1080p HD playback and capture, and 16GB internal memory. Fingers crossed it comes with an expandable microSD card slot as well.”
