It has been reported that the Chief Executive Officer of Twitter; Dick Costolo has been talking about a likely game changing function that might be added to Twitter soon. He was reported to have told reporters that the company will soon incorporate a search and download function of past tweets.
He told them that they were working on a tool that will allow users to export all of their tweets and that they will be able to download it as a file. He said users will be able to let other users have access to their archived tweets which they can search through. But he also said he did not see a future where anyone can access the archived tweets of another account user arbitrarily and without the permission of the owner of that account.
He explained that that can of search would involve a whole new set of technical issues and it was not something that you can just tell a couple of engineers to go and resolve. Costolo did not give any specific dates for the launching of these functions.
The news in itself is something users have been clamoring for a long time now and it is one of the most requested for additions to the service. What is currently obtainable for EU users is that they would have to formally write to Twitter as in a legal request before they can have access to their own archives which is usually sent to them as a zipped file. EU residents had this privilege because EU law requires stipulates that services such as Twitter must give in to such requests once it is made.
This alone shows that it is very feasible to do. The only thing left is for them to make it more user friendly and incorporate it as a tool just as they have just announced so that no one would need to go to a court to have such a request granted. What’s more, a service like Oldtweets that specializes in indexing the very first year of all tweets and have people search through theirs have shown that the service is in high demand.
Users will now expect Twitter to make good on their word and will be hoping that this is implemented sooner rather than later.
