China’s Leading Search Co. Baidu To Launch Mobile Browser; Is It Getting Too Crowded?

(Before It's News)

Baidu Inc, a leading search engine provider in China is about to launch a mobile centric browser. The mobile internet sphere is growing very rapidly. In China the total number of users accessing internet from their portable devices has surpassed those who use the desktop computer. At 388 Million & counting, these users need to be tapped for a revenue generation stream & that too very soon, feels the company. At present there are multiple companies whose browsers are already active. China’s UCWeb Inc’s UC Browser itself is very popular elsewhere too. Not to mention Google’s own Chrome as well as Android browsers, Firefox mobile, Dolphin, Apple Inc’s Safari, Opera etc. are already vying for their market share.

What’s so special about Baidu Browser? Baidu’s GM Mobile and Cloud Computing division Li Mingyuan claims that Baidu Browser is 20% faster than its rivals. Additionally, the browser will allow streaming of High Definition (HiDef) videos without requiring additional apps or software. Baidu has also enabled the browser to seamlessly run web-based mobile applications. To top it all, Baidu’s browser is designed to run even on basic & feature phones. Perhaps its decision to invest 10 Billion Yuan (US$ 1.6 Billion) to setup a cloud computing center has given the browser its powers.

Why is a browser so important to these technology based companies? Having your own browser / application means, people are bound to your technologies & pathways to access internet. This gives the companies unrestricted access to surfing habits & patterns which can be later leveraged to offer tailored advertisements that match the user. Having the ability to monitor these patterns is the primary step to successful monetization of the mobile platform. This is the precise reason why Baidu too is interested in developing its own browser. At present Baidu relies on traffic from the desktop search for revenue. If it can successfully coax people to adopt its browser, its search engine can be built directly into the browser & its revenue will start from this platform as well.

Which mobile browser do you prefer & why?
