Indian Government Launches Data Portal; Promoting Transparency?

(Before It's News)

The Government of India (GoI) has launched a new initiative titled ‘Data Portal India’.

In an effort to promote exchange of information, not only within the various departments of the Government, but also between Governments of other nations, the Data Portal accessible at data.gov.in, will be open to all. Of course, the data shared will have to comply with the National Data Sharing & Accessibility Policy (NDSAP). Interestingly, this endeavor is in accordance to a joint venture between US Government & GoI.

Transparency has always been a sore issue with the Government. Especially at a time when the present Government has been rocked by scams which seem to come to the surface almost on a daily basis. Hence, the GoI seems to have taken this step. Presently in Beta stage, the Government is seeking feedback from all the users about the portal. The Government is urging people to browse and experience its functionality and usability. Additionally, visitors can also put in requests for the type of Datasets they would like to see on the site. However, it is vital to note that according to the NDSAP, only non-sensitive data can be shared. Additionally, please do not expect ‘Right To Information’ (RTI) queries to be answered here!

What’s the catch? Ministers & other departments who ‘wish’ to publish their data, meant for the common public, can do so on this web-portal. Additionally, the publishing can be presently done only from a valid NIC Email id. Since only a few government officials are given this elusive NIC e-mail id, we wonder, how long will it take for any information to navigate its way through red-tape before it is published. However, in a move unlike the normal pattern, the web-portal will also feature virtual communities where users can discuss their views & offer their suggestions about the happenings.

Have you visited the site? Please share your experience.
