Maharashtra CM, Prithviraj Chavan is worried about the impact of social media sites and social networking on the youth.
Addressing a gathering of teachers and their family members at Kalidas Kalamandir in Nashik on the occasion of Teachers’ Day yesterday the CM said that ‘he was concerned about how the misuse of social networking sites is causing the youth and young adults to behave in an anti-social manner and is the root cause behind the rise of consumerism.’
The CM called for joint action between teachers, parents and politicians to ensure that the youth don’t get addicted to drugs, alcohol and are kept safe from environments like ‘rave’ and ‘chillar parties.’ He went on to say how social media is used in countries abroad for a good cause – to bring about societal changes and revolutions – but is used in India to create disruptions in the functioning of the country.
Lately, social media and the internet has been at the center of a lot of debate with regards to their benefits or the lack of it. Internet Addiction Disorder is the new-age disorder that is afflicting netizens around the world. The symptoms include social alienation, a lack of empathy, being too involved in your virtual avatars and having difficulty in understanding ‘reality’. Falling closely behind is email addiction which reports say has the same affects on the human mind as drug addiction.
While the CM is correct to show concern, it would be nice to know what he plans to do about it. A help program for ‘addicts’ and an education program that teaches young adults about the benefits and pitfalls of social media would be a good place to start.
