(Before It's News)

HDFC Bank has released a mobile banking application entirely in Hindi. The second largest private sector bank hopes to facilitate & promote mobile banking to more than 560 Million Indian nationals who wish to transact in their National Language.  Additionally, the bank has also activated its SMS banking in Hindi. Currently available only for the Android OS, the free application can be downloaded from Google Play app store.

We gave the application a quick review & were pleasantly surprised:

Translation is one thing, but it is truly great to know that the application offers a complete native experience once launched. All the menus are available in simple-to-understand words & menus are laid out in such a way as to invite the user to execute more than 30 functions that he or she would do at any Banking or ATM terminal.

Falling short of dispensing physical notes, the Mobile Banking app allows non-English speaking community to check their balance, scroll through transaction history, transfer funds and even pay bills among many other functions including Demat! Basically the app takes the entire experience of its English counterpart that we reviewed earlier & tailors it for people with a preference for the Hindi Language

As for the SMS banking, keeping in mind the users who still use basic phones, the Hindi SMS banking service allows customers to carry out a set of 10 simple, but crucial banking transactions like balance enquiry, mini statement and stop cheque requests. Since basic phones cannot run menu-driven applications, the service must operate on USSD code structure.

Indian banking is witnessing a paradigm shift when it comes to usage pattern. Even the ATM usage is being gradually reduced & electronic mediums like computers, mobiles, smartphones & tablets are being increasingly adopted to carry out routine banking functions. However, it is for the first time that any Bank has specifically catered to regional audience who are not comfortable with English.

Do you think, going native will enhance HDFC Bank’s customer count or win the loyalty of its present user base?
