Much had been speculated about the parent nomenclature for app and software downloaded specifically for the new Windows 8. Majority of these were drawn from the ‘Metro UI’ which was the working name for Windows 8 special Start Screen. But now, after a slight goof-up, the air has cleared over the name – and very predictably, ‘Windows Store Apps’ it is.
Apparently a day ago, a Will Tschumy of Microsoft – had erroneously declared that the apps store was to be called ‘Windows 8 Store Applications’. But soon the PR team of Microsoft came down with a damage control drive, justifying it as ‘happens all the time’. Engadget has been the prime reporting agency on both these developments. However, the names may not do all Microsoft wants to achieve in this flagship of new user interface and refreshing new series of devices customized specifically for this new release, with its hardware partners.
Windows 8 has dealt with much criticism ever since its pre-release developers testing period, as users complained about a diverse set of problems. While the new user interface was always appreciated for its refreshing take on arranging application in tiles and asymptotic panels; users complained how there was such unprecedented change under the bonnet of the new Windows OS. Some of these complaints included the annoying incompatibility of Windows 8 with many prominent and widely used applications.
But it seems most of the disgust was with the sudden shift from vertical browsing of menus (in earlier versions) to the horizontal panel swipes in the new Windows 8 Start Screen. This also includes the absence of the Windows Start menu and Start button which majority of the Windows user are habituated to.
Thankfully to cater to such complaints, Windows 8 users can now download a free app from the Windows 8 Store: Win8 StartButton. This novel app is engineered to let users: bypass the Start Screen and directly enter the Desktop on boot; opt between classic, Windows XP, Windows Aero, & Windows 7 appearances; restore the familiar ‘Start Orb’ and menu styles of the previous versions.
In spite of a breakthrough effort to cater and merge the services for mobile, handhelds, laptops, and desktop systems – Windows 8 has borne the brunt of much negative publicity amidst shocking and optimistic sales of Windows 8 since its opening on October 26 this year. With the new Windows Store Apps, things seem to get greener for the company – as this might open the channels of monetization alike the Google Play, thereby increasing the usability and the goodwill of the Windows all together.
