Gamers are motivated in putting their guns down on Friday, to pay respect to the victims of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.
They have launched this campaign while a heated debate on the influence of violent video games on people, continues.
A number of newspapers and influential personalities in the UK and US have criticized the aggressive games in present time, and some even connected the shootings with the assassin’s gaming skills.
Others are busy in counterarguments, advocating that millions of people play action games, but in rare cases, they actually try to repeat their virtual experiences, in the real world.
Day of Ceasefire for Online Shooters is a Facebook group inviting people for a one day ceasefire. They wish to observe the event as a symbol of respect, and aren’t taking any active part in the responsibility vs. violence debate. The group said, “We are simply making a statement that we as gamers, are not going to sit back and ignore the lives that were lost. Instead, we will embrace the families with our love and support.”
Antwand Pearman, CEO of gamerfitnation.com and the man behind this group, explained that his purpose is to show the world that gamers are sensible people, who understand the consequences of violence in the real world. He pleads gamers for just one day to show the world that they have a heart too, and don’t give a damn about what people think and how they are portrayed in the media.
