While handing out awards at the Web Ratna Awards 2012, Union Minister for Communications and IT Kapil Sibal chose to highlight the need for increasing collaborative efforts to achieve online transparency.
This year’s Web Ratna Awards 2012 winners include State Departments of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu & Bihar, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Corporate Affairs from the central side of Government of India.
The Web Ratna Awards attempt at celebrating the outstanding achievements of different Government Departments (State & Central) in categories like Citizen Centric Service, Outstanding Web Content, Innovative Use of Technology, among others. These awards are an annual affair & nominees are screened via multi-stage processes & by prominent senior members from the Government, Academia and institutes/organizations. e-Governance seems to have continually received a huge short in the arm for some time now. Thanks to multiple initiatives taken by state & central Governments, citizens today are enjoying more services from the comfort of their homes. From pensions to Aadhar cards, online initiatives are spreading awareness & empowering people with newer tools to effect change.
However, there’s a dark side too, to the Government’s over excessive paranoid nature that attempts to either clamp down on the core freedoms. Though there have been numerous attempts of varying intensities & tactics, the Government has still to take a stand about such policies. Thankfully, Indian Government, owing to the democratic nature of India has still not started acting dictatorial. Ironically, even if it does take a strong stand against issues like piracy, some imaginative enterprises are finding loopholes to circumnavigate the roadblocks.
Kapil Sibal chose to use the podium at the awards, to stress the need for heightened collaboration primarily to weed out duplication & enhance transparency. It is indeed the need of the hour since the Government recently launched another portal to share information. Many such platforms exist today, but owing to lack of inter-department collaboration the information is scattered & hard to come by. Will the Union Minister’s call for a collective effort be heeded?
