(Before It's News)

When Google started its Fiber network in Kansas, I was super excited! After all 1 Gbits per second is not something you would take lightly. With these speeds, network lag seems like a primitive problem. There will be no buffering, no latency issues and no more abuses thrown at ISPs. But then reality dawned fairly quickly. I sit here in India where the overall broadband connectivity has many people and companies frustrated. I resigned myself to the fact that I would only be able to see it after at least 4-5 years.

So imagine my surprise when I heard news about Startup Village in Kochi getting an Internet connection which is capable of reaching 1 Gbit (1000 mb). Startup village is a hybrid venture incubator which is promoted by the Department of Science & Technology in partnership with TechnoPark, an upcoming IT park in Kochi. This new development would make it the first area in India to get such superb speeds. We have covered Startup Village before in our blog. They are trying to foster a startup culture in Kerala and this is keeping with the Centre and State’s vision to make Kerala an upcoming IT hub. Many established companies in the technology and allied spaces are lending their support to Startup village, notable among them being Blackberry, IBM, Oracle, KPMG and ICICI. The aim to is support a thriving startup ecosystem in the state. Yes, I find a startup operating in God’s own country fairly exciting!

Startup Village’s CEO Sijo George Kuvilla spoke about the new development.

“The new connectivity comes as a milestone in our efforts to ensure the most conducive atmosphere of growth for the increasing number of incubatees. World-class infrastructure facilities will prompt the young companies to perform and meet the global competition.Startup Village aims to build the elements of a world class tech ecosystem to realise the dream of a Silicon Coast in India. The vision at this grandiose scale is driven by one of India’s most successful IT entrepreneurs, Kris Gopalakrishnan, co-founder of Infosys and powered by Dept of Science and Technology, Government of India. The Startup Village at Kochi is the first location of this national pilot, which would be replicated to other parts of India in the coming months.”

This is a superb development and should kick off higher speed connections for startups and enterprises around the country. This development gives me hope that we as a nation will get such bandwidths soon enough. Let’s see how long it takes to get here.
