The tiny pieces of silicon that power our smartphones and tablets continue to get smaller, more efficient and more powerful with each new generation. It’s only a matter of time before they meet and exceed traditional desktop silicon in that regard, though how long is still a mystery. But after seeing the specs on Nvidia’s next-gen Tegra 4 wonderchip, we’re thinking that day is coming very soon.
The 4+1 design the Tegra 3 introduced which sees four normal cores powering all strenuous tasks and a single, low-power core for screen-off states remains. However, the 4+1 CPU will now be based off of a more power-efficient 28nm process (the same process on Snapdragon’s fantastic S4 processor). Along with greatly improved efficiency comes more power. On the GPU front, things are insanely upgraded with beastly 72-core GPU that Nvidia claims will result in 6x more performance. In real-world figures, we’re looking at 2,560 x 1600 resolution w/ 1080p output @ 120Hz support. The leaked slide also had “murmurings” of 4K resolutions as well (which would quite frankly be insane). Visual candy aside, support for USB 3 and dual-channel DDR3L memory is also included.
Look for more (solid) info in early 2013.
