Mobile payments and mobile wallets were just making their initial forays into consumer consciousness in 2012, with some noted movements in the second half of the year with the Starbucks-Square rollout and the ISIS launch.
In 2013, Aite senior analyst Rick Oglesby told Mobile Marketing & Technology that expects to see more of the concept of the point of sale system being used for mobile payments, like the Starbucks-Square example, with the technologies moving “upmarket” to be used with larger and larger companies. He also expects mobile devices like iPads being used to check out customers in the store.
Oglesby also sees e-commerce moving more to mobile devices, with consumers shopping with iPads, iPhones and similar devices being used increasingly for shopping. So merchants will need to mobile optimize their Web sites to take advantage of the trend.
The digital wallet will become mainstream in 2013, according to Olgesby. He expects more companies to use a card form factor, like the recent partnership announced between Discover and PayPal. Paying with a mobile device at a retail location will not be mainstream anytime soon, Oglesby says “You’re not going to be able to pay with Square at all of the major retailers in the country.”
Olgesby added that NFC will continue to be a viable solution in 2013, though not as originally envisioned – with the payment information stored on the payment device. All new point of sale devices will be NFC enabled. QR codes will likely be a transitional technology, Oglesby added.
