The Pittsburgh Technology Council welcomed Carnegie Mellon University’s new President, Dr. Subra Suresh this morning for its Huntington Bank Breakfast Briefing Series.
Having begun his tenure at CMU this July, Dr. Suresh brings both passion and strong credentials to this position. Most recently, he has served as President Obama’s appointed Director the National Science Foundation, but his experience also includes service as the Dean of the School of Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During his short time here in Pittsburgh, Dr. Suresh has already demonstrated a strong desire to leverage Carnegie Mellon’s unique capabilities to help propel the growth of the region’s economy.
Here are the key take aways from his presentation that addressed the “Big Challenges in Science and Technology”:
- Federal research is a: $1 billion enterprise in Pittsburgh; Pitt is #5 in funding from NIH; CMU is #5 in funding from DARPA; CMU is #1 in funding from NSF-IT
- Government-funded university research has powerful global economic impact. He cited the Human Genome Project and Autonomous Vehicles (DARPA). CMU debuted its driverless car this fall.
- Technology + social science + creativity! Technology alone is no longer enough.
- What are the opportunities at the intersections of technology with the arts, design, and social sciences? How can Pittsburgh support creative industries and other knowledge-based collaborations?
